On March 2, 2012, BP settled numerous lawsuits arising from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These suits were settled between BP and those individuals and businesses that filed claims.
On March 3, 2012, Kenneth R. Feinberg released this statement:
"The announced Settlement in the Gulf is good news. It avoids a lengthy complex trial and uncertain appeals. I point with significant pride and satisfaction to the achievements of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF): reviewing over one million claims submitted by 573,000 claimants and paying some $6.1 billion to approximately 225,000 individuals and businesses in just over 18 months. I believe the GCCF has successfully fulfilled its mandate and urge an orderly transition to the new proposal claims program."
Since this announcement, the GCCF will be closed and all new and existing claims must now be handled through a court-monitored program in New Orleans. A minimum of $7.8 billion has been set aside to pay these claims.
